When the Emperor Was Divine

In the spring of 1942, a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, evacuation orders have been posted for "all persons of Japanese ancestry." A nameless family consisting of a mother, son and daughter are packing up their home. The father, questioned in the middle of the night by the FBI, has already been relocated to a camp for "dangerous enemy aliens" in New Mexico. After a long and miserable train ride, the family is introduced to their new residence in the barracks of an internment camp in Utah. They are imprisoned at this place surrounded by barbed wire fences, wooden towers, and guards. Time passes slowly and they begin to adjust to a new life despite the harsh seasons of the desert. After the war has ended, they are each sent home with $25 (the same amount given to criminals) and a train ticket. Returning to a vandalized home and an altered neighborhood, they find it shocking and difficult to adjust to in the beginning. Later, reunited with their father, there is the heartbreaking conclusion that their lives have been changed forever by prejudice and war. |
